It’s a sad truth that when it comes to superheroes in Television shows, a female lead is sometimes a hard sell. Even though the hero has an established past and rogues galleries, the fact of the matter is that the demographic viewer is looking to see how she looks more than what powers she has. Not to say that the powers don’t also help lend criticism from the audience, but even when potential presidential candidates mention how hot she is the truth rears its ugly head. The attractiveness of a female heroine is definitely a factor, but let’s not forget that she is also a positive role model for girls of all ages. Supergirl makes sure to point this out in the first episode when Calista Flockhart tells Kara  that there’s nothing wrong with calling a woman a girl.

The show made it a point to explain who Kara was in the pilot episode and briefly show, with a blacked out face, Superman, but it didn’t affect any action scenes and it was merely a flashback. The second episode mentions him, but the episode coming out tonight has him stepping in and helping Supergirl with a fight against Reactron.

I understand that Supergirl is still finding out what powers she has, and her sister and the company she works for are training Supergirl but does will Superman keep showing up in tough battles? The two episodes that have aired have really been about a strong female lead, and I feel that having Superman show up is only going to slightly portray Supergirl as not as powerful. In my opinion this isn’t good for the female figure that they are building up, but since the episode hasn’t aired yet I don’t know how it will end. I like Supergirl and I hope it continues to keep up with the strong female lead, I’d just like to hear and see less Superman in a show not about him.
