While at VRLA this past weekend, I was joking around with Rene about there being a game there that would mimic the movie The Lawnmower Man. Luckily all the experiences that were there looked a lot better than what that movie showed us back in the early 90’s, but that movie still stuck in my head and I wondered if they had made a game out of it. Well, I should have remembered that they turned a lot of movies into unnecessary games so of course I found it.
I don’t remember much of the movie, so a lot of the game may relate to the film but I highly doubt it. You get to choose from either the main male or female characters in the game, I tried both and they both have the same skills and voice, and then you get dropped into what I can only assume is your neighborhood. You have one weapon that can do rapid fire or be held down to do a bigger blast much like Mega Man’s arm cannon. There are some men running around who try to shoot you for some reason and your weird bubble gun kills them. I can only assume you’re in a computer simulation because there are parts where computer text appears over objects to tell you whats hidden in them. For example, the trash cans on the first level have data discs, so when you blow up the trash cans discs fly out. What the data discs do, I have no idea. After a platforming section you come to a spinning octagon which you have to shoot until it turns green. Once the octogon has changed to green you can enter a first person VR level where you have to navigate through walls with skillfully cut holes. If you dare touch any wall, then you have to start again. After reaching the exit and going to a new area, I realized that this is very much like Superman 64. In order to progress to the next level you have to pass, but in this level you walk through open passages and don’t fly through rings. The next level introduces small monkey which can be killed for power ups and extra men. You can get a different suit or upgrade your gun to shoot more bullets, like in Contra. The only bad thing is that as soon as you get hit you lose everything, and you get hit a lot. The second level brings the always popular boss “The Car”. Yes, part of the level involves you jumping over a car and then shooting it until it explodes into discs and possibly power ups. You also fight a motorcycle, which to me is more over powered than the car because that’s where I died.
I stopped after my death, because those are the rules of how I play my Way Back Wednesday games. I’m sure I could have gone farther in the game if I tried again, but the game wasn’t that interesting. There are a lot of graphics and the bottom that don’t tell you anything and the VR parts look to be more annoying as the game goes on. If people give Superman 64 about the rings, then I’ll give Lawnmower Man the same about the mandatory VR wall dodging game.
