Way Back Wednesday – Growl

Released for arcade cabinets as well as the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive in 1991, Growl is a side scrolling beat’em up with a different kinds of damsel in distress. Regardless of who of the 4 muscle men you choose you fight as the object stays the same, to destroy poachers and save animals. Yes, this is a game where the only women on the screen are those who are trying to kill you for going after their boss.

Each level has you beat up numerous men and well dressed women who attack you with whips, grenades, metal bars, pistols and even machine guns. At the end of each level you fight a boss, and release a different caged animal who helps you defeat animals for a few minutes. This is pretty much a PETA wet dream, but with characters that resemble Indiana Jones and possibly the Macho Man Randy Savage.

The amount of violence in this game is something to just laugh at, as you throw grenades and explode body parts of enemies or just flat out shoot them . There are times where you hit bosses and they also blow up, like they were filled with dynamite, and the whip animations look really obscene. I suppose with everything going in the world right now, this type of violence wouldn’t fly in any way shape or form no matter what the cause. The reaction to Resident Evi 4 and Resident Evil 5 with the game play showing violence against minorities would pale in comparison to what people would say when they saw what happens in this game.

This is something to play and laugh at by yourself or with a friend. This game isn’t meant to be taken seriously, but may raise awareness of poachers if you’re in an area that deals with that kind of threat.
