With this being the final Way Back Wednesday of the holiday season I figured I would scour my game collection and come up with the most Christmas filled game I could find. After many scrolls on my mouse I found Daze Before Christmas for the Super Nintendo. When I first saw the title I thought this was some kind of home brew that some stoners made, but it turned out to be a legitimate game.
The game gives a page of dialogue pretty much stating that you’ll be playing as Santa and that three evil bad guys scared away your elves, stole your plans and are planning to make your life a living hell. When I started my game I was surprised just how it looked. The Super Nintendo was released so long ago that I feel like all those games are pixelated, but this game looks pretty damn good. Everthing about the game, including the characters, are smooth with no jagged edges. You play as Santa with your only weapon being an unlimited number of snow balls, and your job is to find elves in the stage and collect presents. At the end of each level they tally up the packages you’ve collected and give you a score, so there really isn’t a set number of things to find in the stage. You could easily just run though this and collect no elves and the only thing to be affected would be your score. There are no power ups, but you do pick up hats to replenish your health, Santa heads to get another life and a bell to mark that you’re half way through the level. All the enemies are one hit kills and with unlimited ammo, I spammed the hell out of my weapon as I went through the levels.
The game is a 2D platformer and even though it goes left to right, there are a lot of blind spots. There will times where you don’t know how far to jump, because it could be onto an enemy or into a ditch. The game does a pan down below you if you crouch for a few seconds, which helps in the beginning to see the platforms. Some of the later levels have disappearing platforms, which just adds another level of frustration.
There isn’t that much to this game. Your levels are represented by an advent calendar and you throw snowballs.
