I know it may surprise you but I don’t speak or understand japanese, which made me playing an import game that much better. I’m a fan of Appleseed as a manga, but I have never seen an Appleseed game so when I saw that I was able to play one on my Super Nintendo I gave it a shot.
The first thing I mentioned comes right into play as there is a bunch of writing that I don’t understand. I tried every button on my control and was able to move past the main screen and onto a screen where you choose a main and sub weapon. I assumed that this being the first level, would be easy so I just went with what they had and press start. If there was a back story in that writing I missed it, because you start out as Briareos in a factory shooting people and other machines. You have a simple set of attacks that can be switched out. You have your main gun, sub-weapon and bombs which never seem to run out. I went through and fired all my guns and bombs up and down the level, and never ran out. The one thing that hinders gameplay, aside from it being an import, is the lack of a heads up display. If I had life I didn’t know how much I had left, and if there was a time limit I’m sure I used it all up.
I only got through one level and it wasn’t a cake walk. At the end of the first section there’s a wall with no directions, arrows or markers showing where to go. After a few minutes of walking around throwing my unlimited supply of bombs I saw that I was able to blow up the floor and jump down. With the 2 or 3 other robots I saw, the level was comprised mostly of shooting people and platforming. The platforming was difficult because there’s a jump button, but in order to jump higher you have to press up the directional pad. Jumping was my downfall as I fighting the level boss. I tried to jump over the attacks, but couldn’t seem to make it over. I also found out that I wasn’t invincible and when I started dying I would turn a darker shade of red. Needless to say I didn’t finish the level and decided not to try again.
Like most old games I play, this is strictly game genie game. If you want the satisfaction of completing it, then pop in those codes and have fun.
