When Nintendo made the announcement that they would be bringing a side scrolling endless runner featuring the most recognizable plumber in the world, the internet laid into the concept with snark, speculation and the big question of how much money Nintendo will try to milk from its audience. I don’t mean to put it so harshly, but that’s the bottom line for all free to play games and we have recently found out that Super Mario Run will have the option not be.

It was right to speculate that Super Mario Run will be free to play, but Nintendo announced in a press release that the game will be available for $9.99 on December 15. The price doesn’t unlock part of the game, it’s $9.99 for the whole game with unlimited play. Since the game isn’t out yet, we don’t know what the micro-transactions will be and how much you’ll spend to play the whole game one transaction at a time. Now Nintendo has said that the full game will be unlocked for $9.99, but that doesn’t mean you’ll gather enough energy to move to the next level. Unlocked could mean you get to play any level you want, but if you don’t meet the requirements for that level you’ll either have to wait or pay.
