Since the dawn of downloadable content the word free has rarely been used. There have been clever ways of getting supposed free content by buying it from certain establishments, but is it really free. If you don’t want to buy a game from Gamestop or Amazon but you want to play it, then you’re stuck with paying for it. Other times there will be separate DLC for the same game available at different places, the content of the DLC is determined where you bought the game. This goes back to if you want to play that other content, but you bought it at the wrong place, then you’ll have to pay for it. There have been some good DLC for great prices or horrible season passes where it costs almost as much as the game. Owners of current generation gaming consoles and even PC gamers know the woes of wanting to play something, but being torn because you may not want to pay the asking price.
DLC has even crossed over from playing levels and characters to cosmetic DLC, meaning you can change the skin of a character for $5. This is something that I really don’t think is fair, because it doesn’t change the game, just the way you look. I feel it’s a way for a game to remove the customization feature and just sell you what you could have spent 3 minutes doing in a menu.
You may think all these complains may be going unheard, but let me tell you that these have been heard and are being addressed. Recent news, via IGN, states that all DLC in Street Fighter 5 will be free via Fight Money. This money can be earned by playing through the game and it will be used to purchase new characters. So let me get this straight, you get new characters by putting time in to the game and you get rewarded for it? This sounds very reminiscent to fighting games where you would beat the game with different characters to unlock characters.
This isn’t a new feature when it comes to games, but it is a big step forward to seeing how profitable this could be. With people having to play and complete different challenges to unlock different characters, you’ll start to see more people on Twitch streaming for hours on end or videos on Youtube if characters being unlocked. Both of these outlets can be monetized and money can be made. If you’re a good player and have good interaction with the audience, not only will you be promoting this game but be making money off of free DLC.
