Nintendo was one of the first to try to bring video games to the mainstream via a movie and the result was the horrible Super Mario Bros..Even as a young child I knew that the movie was bad and nothing made sense. I didn’t know why there were so many thing mixed together and why the enemies looked the way they did, it was only later in life that I found out just how mangled the filming of that movie was. Nintendo hasn’t made any other movies since Super Mario Bros., but that may change in the future.

During an interview with Fortune Shigeru Miyamoto gave some insight about Nintendo and whether or not they would be making any more movies.

We’ve had, over the years, a number of people who have come to us and said ‘Why don’t we make a movie together — or we make a movie and you make a game and we’ll release them at the same time?’ Because games and movies seem like similar mediums, people’s natural expectation is we want to take our games and turn them into movies… I’ve always felt video games, being an interactive medium, and movies, being a passive medium, mean the two are quite different…As we look more broadly at what is Nintendo’s role as an entertainment company, we’re starting to think more and more about how movies can fit in with that — and we’ll potentially be looking at things like movies in the future…For Nintendo IP, a more active approach will be taken in areas outside the video game business, including visual content production and character merchandising.

Nintendo has already announced that they will be making a separate section in a Universal Studios theme park, so could this also be a deal for help with movies? They’ve already shot down the rumor of a Legend of Zelda show coming to Netflix, so what’s really going on?

In my opinion, the first thing they need to do it make an amazing Legend of Zelda movie. That has been my one request since this whole Netflix and movie news was announced, and it’s the one thing that can bring Nintendo back up from the bad movie pit.
