First and foremost let me say that Satine Phoenix is an absolute angel, and I can now genuinely say that she is an extremely nice and understanding person. Satine has been at a few conventions that I’ve attended, but I never had the testicular fortitude to actually go up and introduce myself. The bad thing is by not going up to her and saying hello and introducing myself like a normal person would, I just fed into the sterotype of nerds or geeks being afraid of women with of immense beauty.
This past weekend I did a few walk bys with my buddy Rene before I actually went up and said hello. Let me tell you, that band aid couldn’t have been ripped off any smoother, because as soon as I started talking to her all my worries went away. I know that may sound like something out of a movie, but it’s true and I’m actually embarrassed that it took me so long to say hello. I had seen her book New Praetorians at her booths set up during different conventions, and it always looked interesting to me but I never knew what it was about. When I actually began talking to her and we did our first interview, I’ll get to that, I got a special in depth telling of what the book and main character were all about. Being the co-creator, she was able to elaborate on the characters and plot all while letting me get to know her more as a person. The interview we did was great and ran for about 10 minutes. I was flying high because I had overcome my fear and when I got home that high went to a low real fast.
When I plugged in my equipment I realized that the video was fine but the audio was a mess. I messed with it as much as I could but couldn’t salvage anything. I took to twitter and complained about the audio, then took a deep breath read New Praetorians and then tweeted to Satine asking for a chance for a second interview. The book was so great, it had given me a second wind and the courage to ask for a make up interview. It was late, so I went to sleep and received a response the next day saying yeah she would do the interview. I just want to point out that fan interaction is key and those who take the time to respond deserve all the respect in the world.
I went back for the second day of comic con with 70 pages of knowledge about the story of New Praetorians and had an amazing interview. I just want to say thank you again to Satine Phoenix, for not only cementing me as a fan of New Praetorians but for being an all around great person.
Please enjoy the interview with Satine and I.
