I, along with a couple of my friends, were chosen to participate in the Gears of War Ultimate Edition Multiplayer Beta on Xbox One. The game is a high definition version of the first game and as of right there are only social and competitive multiplayer options available. You get to play as either the COG’s or Locusts and are equipped with a smoke bomb, shotgun, pistol and the good old Lancer. For the social side, you get a team deathmatch map with limited respawns for each team. Some of the original maps are back, but they’ve had their graphic resolution turned up and don’t offer as much XP as in competitive play. If you decide to play competitive, you get the same loadouts but the only mode to play is king of the hill, and you get a lot more XP playing this mode.

I don’t remember being as bad as I am, but it’s kind of embarrassing. The worst part is that people will drop off your team if they see that you’re level is really low. People dropping in and out of the lobby wouldn’t be so bad, but  this beta isn’t open to the public so I found myself waiting a long time to start a match.

All the mechanics are the same, along with lancer battles and melee kills. The voice acting is still there as well, so you get to hear Marcus Phoenix or the Locust say phrases during the match. I really didn’t find any difference between the characters available to be picked, so it’s mostly up to you who you want to play as. Every day during the beta you get a new prize, that comes in the form of a new gun skin. The skin doesn’t do anything but look nice and not help you mask your position in dark maps.

I may sound like I’m being a little negative, but I’m not. Like most HD remakes, this game looks like they spent a lot of time making aspects of the gear and environment look as best as it can on the Xbox One. I would like to see more guns and more maps, but the beta hasn’t been out a week yet so I look forward to whatever else will become available.
