Being a San Francisco 49er fan is tough right now. We may be faithful, but it’s a little hard to watch the team you root for lose again and again. Through the thick and thin I am faithful and I’m also still a Colin Kaepernick fan, so when I saw him promoting a free to play Football game for Android I decided to check it out.
I’m well aware that this isn’t really a free to play, but a freemium game and once you get past the tutorial you quickly learn that. I captured video of the tutorial and game they have you play, but like always the footage didn’t work so I captured a team that I had established after a few games. It was a team of three but with the money you earn playing you can buy and add a fourth player off the free agent list. The only stipulation is that you have to be of a certain level and have the money to buy the free agent. Kaepernick is available if you have $5,000 and are at level 5, but you gain levels slowly so this is where a real money paid transaction may take place. The play book is also full when you’re in your tutorial, but when you start your actual game you only have a few plays for short, medium and long. If you want to buy bigger plays, the each short will cost you $500, medium will cost you $1000 and $1500 will get you one long play added to your play book. These are all offensive plays, because you never play defense.
The game play is a little odd, but bare with me as I try to explain it. You tap the screen to hike it and then tap it to where you’re player is going to throw it to them, or you can double tap it and throw a bullet. As a quarterback you can run after you hike the ball, but the teams are only 4 or 4 and the field is small so it’s best to use that at the goal line. When you throw a ball to a receiver you can have them dive for the ball by swiping or just let them catch it normally. The controls when you have the ball are pretty simple. A swipe left or right will have you spin, up and down will have you jump or put your head down and rush in like a battering ram. To speed up your player with turbo, just double tap the player, but be careful because you only have so much boost available.
You may be asking how you win a game, and to be honest I had to play a few times to understand as well. Each game you start against a team that already has a predetermined score and a clock running down. You only get one period, so if the clock runs down and you haven’t scored enough points then you lose. You can add more time to the clock with completed passes. A completed pass will add 5 seconds to the clock. There are no field goals so it touchdown or no score at all. Once you score a touchdown you have the option of getting an automatic 1 point or an attempt to manually go for 2, this is where the clock and the opponents team come into play. If you have time and the score is good, then take the extra point and continue. Once you take a point or two, then you automatically get the ball back. The other team never gets the ball, but they can add more points if you go four downs without a score. Since there is no punt, you have to go for it all four downs and the same 10 yards to a first down rules apply. If you don’t complete on fourth down, then you’ll get the ball back but your opponent will have added points to their score. At the end of the game, if you have more points than the other team then you get some money to spend and move on or you can exit.
As I mentioned above, you can use the money to buy free agents and plays but you can also upgrade your current players. Early on your opponent will have level 1 or 2 players, but later on they’ll get higher. A high level person is going to pick you off and provide great coverage. It’s up to you to not only win, but to make sure you team is full of high level people. You can sit for a while and grind to get money, but you also have a stamina bar that fills up daily. If you play too much one day, you’ll have to wait until the next day to play again. Agan, this is where a paid transaction may take place featuring real money. You may also customize your team with a name and change the team uniforms, which will cost money for nice uniforms.
The game is fun, but I do feel that when all my stamina is gone and I need to upgrade my players there will only be an option to wait a week or throw in a few dollars to get my stamina. All the prices are really low and they actually do cut down on time. You can grind and collect money, or you can pay $1.99 and unlock the whole playbook. Due to the way the game is, there is no head to head but there are achievements. These achievements will most likely be achieved throughout gameplay.
