Each year there are two big cover reveals in the world of sports and sports entertainment. The first is the illustrious Madden cover, which comes with free side of the notorious Madden curse, the second is 2K‘s WWE cover. In the past the superstars that were on the cover were popular. The superstars had storylines that brought you in, and they were either heading for or currently holding a championship belt. Last years cover was of John Cena, who is always a fan favorite and who is currently holding the US Championship. This year the WWE decided to go for an older superstar, but an active one in social media.
Ah yes, the all familiar glass breaking can only mean the Texas rattlesnake is here. Stone Cold Steve Austin doesn’t wrestle anymore, but he does host the Broken Skull Challenge and has the very popular Stone Cold Podcast. A few times Stone Cold has appeared after Monday Night Raw to do a live podcast via the WWE Network, the last time he did it was when he had Paul Heyman was a guest. Towards the end of the podcast, Brock Lesnar was brought up and the interview became a little hostile. Being the WWE, this could all be a test to see if the WWE universe really wants to see the rumored Austin vs. Lesnar match at the next Wrestlemania. There have already been rumors of a Sting vs. Undertaker match, so why not add another to the bill.
Vince McMahon is a master at marketing, and even though the WWE Network may not have all the numbers they want, there is still a reason why WWE is still on the air. I believe that Stone Cold being on the cover is another way of getting Stone Cold back into the mouths of the WWE Universe and inevitably having him show up on Monday Night RAW. Wrestlemania 32 is set to be held next year in Arlington,Texas, the home state of one Stone Cold Steve Austin. There is too much pointing at Stone Cold for something not to happen.
